Estimating Imaging Artifacts Caused by Internal Multiples
نویسندگان
چکیده
Imaging with seismic data is typically carried out under the assumption of single scattering. Here we illustrate a theory that includes multiply scattered waves in the imaging process. We estimate artifacts in the image caused by internal multiples rather than estimating the multiples themselves in the data. The theory behind this approach comes from a series derived from the LippmannSchwinger equation and the Bremmer coupling series. From this theory two images are formed, one with all the data and the other with the estimated artifacts from first-order internal multiples. The construction of the second image requires knowledge of the velocity model to the depth of the up to down reflection in the internal multiple. We illustrate this theory with a synthetic data example and examine the sensitivity of the method to the velocity model.

The Green’s function is the impulse response of a system and is used to infer the properties of the system from surface measurements. In exploration seismology, imaging algorithms use estimates of the Green’s functions along with surface measurements to image the subsurface, i.e. locate the Earth’s interfaces and its properties, so as to identify valuable energy resources. These conventional im...

Marchenko redatuming allows one to use surface seismic reflection data to generate the seismic response at any point in the subsurface due to sources at the surface. Without requiring much information about the earth’s properties, the seismic response generated by Marchenko redatuming contains accurate estimates of not only the primaries, but also internal multiples. A target-oriented imaging m...

Introduction: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was introduced and became more common based on its low cost, fast image procedure rate and low radiation dose compared to CT. This imaging modality improved diagnostic and treatment-planning procedures by providing three-dimensional information with greatly reduced level of radiation dose compared to 2D dental imaging modalitie...

Recently, a novel iterative scheme was proposed to retrieve Green’s functions in an unknown medium from its single-sided reflection response and an estimate of the propagation velocity. In Marchenko imaging, these Green’s functions are used for seismic imaging with complete wavefields, including internal multiple reflections. In this way, common artifacts from these internal reflections are avo...
متن کاملStrategies for imaging with Marchenko-retrieved Green’s functions
Recent papers show that imaging with the retrieved Green’s function constructed by the Marchenko equations, called Marchenko imaging, reduces the artifacts from internal and free-surface multiples compared to standard imaging techniques. Even though the artifacts are reduced, they can still be present in the image, depending on the imaging condition used. We show that when imaging with the upan...
